Lake Maggiore, originally named Verbano, is the largest lake in the province of Varese and the second largest in Italy after Garda. It is divided in three provinces and its source is the river Ticino in Sesto Calende.
On Lake Maggiore there are several areas of interests: the Rocca Borromeo of Angera (now a doll museum was originally a defensive fort); St. Caterina's monestry built on the rocks along the lake; the castles of Cannero, the old refuge of Mazzarditi and the famous pirates of the Verbano.
The most attractive aspect of Lake Maggiore is the extraordinary landscape. rich in natural wonders, history and art. There are many palaces and splendid gardens designed in "Belle Epoque" style.
